Origins of the Aztec Theater

Originally built during the height of the roaring twenties, the Aztec Theatre still boasts the Gatsby-esque grandeur of the by-gone era. The theater was an immediate hit when it opened in 1926, and delighted movie-goers flocked to fill its 1500 seats to watch silent films until it debuted its first talking picture in 1927. This only accelerated the success of the Aztec, and it closed out the 1920’s as one of San Antonio’s foremost entertainment attractions. However, the economic hardships of the Great Depression set the stage for the troubling events that would make the Aztec Theatre one of San Antonio’s most haunted destinations.

The Strikes and Bombing of the Aztec Theater

The first signs of trouble at the Aztec Theatre came during the onset of the Great Depression and were a result of larger issues across the San Antonio theater industry. As theater owners employed austerity measures to contend with the new, bleak economic realities, the city’s projection operators began to suffer under increasingly difficult working conditions. Frustrated with their employers and struggling to stay afloat, thirty projectionists banded together and went on strike in an attempt to force the theater owners to hire more workers. The theater did not take kindly to the strike and decided instead to fire all 30 employees and replace them with nonunion workers from out of town. This led to a rash of sulfur bombings at the theatres, culminating in a May 4th bombing at the Aztec that saw six movie goers injured, with two of them suffering severe burns.

Haunting of Spirits

Stimulated by the economic recovery following the Great Depression, the Aztec saw a return to its glory days in the mid-1930s. Despite the theater’s monetary and cultural success, it quickly became clear that something was amiss. The theater changed hands several times over the coming decades, with a handful of owners selling it off suddenly and without public explanation. It wasn’t long before rumors began to circulate that the infamous venue was haunted, and that it was the tireless souls trapped within the Aztec that sent many of the owners heading for the hills.

Amongst the slew of ghost sightings and spooky happenings reported by the theater’s staff and attendees over the years, one paranormal character has hogged the spotlight — The Phantom Operator. The Legend of La Llorona

The La Llorona legend is one of the most well-known legends in Mexican culture. La Llorona, also known as The Weeping Woman, The Wailer, or La Malinche, is a shade that haunts rivers and streams looking for children to take into the afterlife with her. She has been around since ancient times when she was said to be an Aztec goddess who helped women during childbirth by killing newborns who were not deemed strong enough. Who Was La Llorona?

The real-life La Llorona was named Maria, who was the daughter of a Spanish official in Mexico. La Llorona fell in love with another man and after he left her for someone else she went crazy and drowned their children to be with him forever. Other stories say La Llorona was forced into marriage by her father so when La Llorona found out about an affair, La Llorona killed her children to get back at him. La Llorona is said to be the spirit of a woman who lost her children and drowns other people's in rivers, lakes, or even bathtubs while searching for them.

La Llorona is also tied to the stories told in "Woman Hollering Creek", a collection of short stories by author Sandra Cisneros. In Cisnero's story, a young lady named Maria falls in love with and marries a handsome, rich young man, and their relationship is blessed with two boys and a girl. Soon afterward, the man loses interest in his wife. Knowing that her husband does not care for her any longer, Maria drowns their three children in the river before drowning herself. When she reaches heaven, she is told she cannot enter until she finds her drowned children. Returning to Earth, she searches for them, wailing sorrowfully all the while.

There have been plenty of reports of encounters with La Llorona over the years. These reports range from La Llorona appearing as a wailing woman with no eyes or La Llorona drowning children in bathtubs. The train carved through the bus, cutting it in two. The nun was hurled through the windshield but miraculously survived. However, all of the young kids were tragically killed. Weeks later, ridden with guilt, the nun returned and parked her own car on the tracks, waiting for the train to strike. However, just before it came, her car was pushed off the tracks by some unseen force which many believe to be the ghosts of the deceased children.

Paranormal Investigation Of The 13th Floor Haunted House

Hauntings At The 13th Floor Haunted House

The team that works for the 13th Floor Haunted House reached out to us with complaints of possible hauntings. The building located at 1203 East Commerce Street in San Antonio, Texas 78205 houses a simulated haunted attraction. Famously known as The 13th Floor Haunted House. But in this case we found that the simulated haunted attraction is actually haunted.

The building was built in 1905 and at one time was known as the San Antonio Machine And Supply Company.

As we arrived for our investigation on the night of October 13, 2021 we were greeted by staff retelling ghastly stories about the specters they were experiencing. Doppelgängers, shadow people, disembodied voices, even physical contact being made by ghosts.

We met with attraction supervisor Bree who shared stories about the ghosts calling her out by name. This would later be verified as we conducted spirit box sessions throughout the night. Bree also shared with us stories of guests who claimed to see her doppelgänger in costumes she wore in previous years.

Next we talked to attraction manager Blaine who retold a story of an actor being pulled from the ankles by a doppelgänger that resembled him while performing inside the haunted house. The location where this physical contact took place is no longer used due to the actual fear of being touched by a ghost. This area is where we captured communication with our spirit box.

At this point we were ready to tour the building.

The team led us through the building leading us to locations inside where paranormal activity had occurred. One area shown was an old elevator shaft where it was said someone fell to their death.

After our detailed exploration of the building we asked to be taken to where the most activity had been experienced. That area is where the actor was grabbed by the ankles. In this area there is a rectangle cutout in the wall about waist high. The opening is then covered with a curtain. This area is where an actor can hide to scare people. An actor would be laying on a skateboard like rolling platform and attached to bungee cable to give a fast scare of popping out. Well one night an actor set in this location was pulled by their ankles in this spot. Since this incident no one has utilized this area. This is where we conducted a spirit box session and captured quite a bit of compelling evidence. For example, we heard voices come through and tell us about a burglary that had recently occurred at the haunted house. Staff gasped as they heard the ghost say the word “burglary”. When asked what that was about? The staff then proceeded to confirm they had recently had a burglary of the building. At this point we knew there was something extra special about the 13th Floor Haunted House. Not only is it haunted, it is haunted by intelligent ghosts who are taking note of what is going on around them. Chills from this session set in as we hear countless clues about the goings ons inside this haunted haunted house. We hear the names of people who work there. We were even told to come under the curtain (which naturally we complied). While doing this we continued to have our EMF meters on and detecting energy. At this time we made our way through the building with our Spirit box communicating with the unknown. As we journeyed through the haunted house the feeling of being followed had us constantly looking back and seeing shadows on the wall that did not belong to us.

At the end of the attraction parked inside the building was an actual hearse that the 13th floor had acquired. This of course peaked our curiosity so we opened the back and got in. While sitting in the hearse that was again parked inside a haunted haunted house we captured an EVP that said “go away”.

The night was full of energy. At the conclusion of our paranormal investigation we can definitely say this location is haunted.

One day, in a fit of jealous rage, Sallie’s husband snapped and stalked Sallie through the town. When he finally caught up with her at the Menger Hotel, he unloaded his pistol into her and murdered his wife in cold blood. Keep a lookout for a nearly transparent form donning a maid’s uniform, with a long scarf tied around her head.

Who Was Emily Morgan?

Emily Morgan was an indentured servant in the service of Colonel James Morgan. Born Emily D. West, she changed her name to that of her master, as was the custom at the time. Her famous seduction of Mexico’s famed General Santa Ana allowed the Texas cavalry to win independence from Mexico during the Texas Revolution. When the Texans waged their battle, the general was too involved with Emily to answer the call to action.

7th and 13th Floor Hauntings

The 7th floor of the complex was home to the psychiatric ward and is said to be the most haunted floor of the hotel. Visitors report seeing a Ghost Bride who often wakes guests with terrifying screams. No one knows her or her connection to the hotel.

Technically there is no 13th floor, as was the tradition during that era. The hotel skipped the 13th floor and moved straight from the 12th to the 14th due to superstition. This floor contained the waiting area, and visitors say that the floor has the distinct odor of a hospital.

Eerie Basement

The basement incorporated the morgue and crematorium. The area is blocked off to anyone not on the hotel staff, but employees tell us that the air is heavy and smells of burning flesh. There is also talk of floating orbs and disembodied voices crying out in pain. Bodies cremated in the basement range in the hundreds, leaving plenty of spirits to roam the area.

Remember the Alamo: The Beginnings

Founded by Roman Catholic missionaries in what is now San Antonio, the Alamo began its storied history after it was constructed as a mission in 1718. Originally called Misión San Antonio de Valero, the mission became known as the Alamo in later 19th-century military use during the Mexican War of Independence. After Mexico gained its independence from Spain, the Alamo was transferred to Mexican control. However, the structure was later surrendered during the Texas Revolution.

The Battle of the Alamo

The Alamo became the iconic landmark it remains today during the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. The Alamo was held as a fortress by Texian forces for a short period of time before it was attacked by more than 1,500 Mexican soldiers. The 189 Texians controlling the Alamo, including Davy Crockett, fought valiantly to hold off the soldiers. In the end, all 189 Texians were killed along with at least 1,600 Mexican soldiers. Desire for revenge for the battle became a rallying cry for Texians, leading to the eventual defeat of the Mexican Army and the formation of the Republic of Texas.

A Paranormal Investigator Recounts A Ghost Or Something Darker.

My name is Robert and I am a paranormal investigator for RJA Ghost Tours. Today, I am prepared to tell you a story of an encounter I had years ago during a paranormal investigation. Preface to this story: before this investigation, I had never had anything affect me the way this entity affected me that night. During my career as a paranormal investigator, I have been on countless investigations and have visited some not just intimidating but actually scary locations. We have been to some pretty dark and scary locations and I have never had anything physically affect me the way I am about to describe to you.

The following occurred during a paranormal investigation of what is known today as the haunted Sheraton Gunter Hotel located in downtown San Antonio, Texas USA. This hotel is well known for being a haunted hotel. One of the stories told about the hotel revolves around a murder that happened in 1965. The murder involved a man named Walter Emerick who is said to have killed an unknown blonde woman. A body was never recovered but room 636 was covered in blood. The blood and Emerick were discovered by a maid who entered the room after believing the "Do Not Disturb" sign had been left on the door by accident. As the maid walked in she encountered Emerick with blood-soaked sheets in his hands. She naturally screamed. Emrick placed his finger over his mouth in a motion to signal her to be quiet. Emrick then fled the room to evade capture. Emrick later committed suicide in a nearby hotel minutes before police found him. This is still an unsolved crime.

Our visit to the hotel that night was in search of ghosts related to this murder story. To better understand all of the possible scenarios I started walking Emrick's escape route. Down the hall from the suspected murder room, I walked up to a window where a fire escape is located. My idea of where I thought our murder suspect could have chosen to escape. This is where I had my experience. The following things happened simultaneously. First, do you know that feeling you get when you sit on your foot for a long time, and then it gets numb and tingly? Well, that's what I felt starting from the bottom of my spine coming up to my shoulders down my arms and into my hands and fingers. Immediately after this occurred I got the feeling that someone was behind me. Now, remember, I am looking out a window thinking about where and how Emrick escaped. As I looked up in the reflection of the glass I saw behind me down the hall was a dark black mass moving towards me. I slowly turned to confront it but suddenly it dissipated right before my very eyes leaving my spine and fingers still tingling. I have never experienced anything that has affected me physically. I have heard things and seen things but I have never felt things.

Was this a ghost or something darker? After this paranormal experience, I have given a lot of thought to whether I believe this was a human spirit or a dark entity of some kind. Although there is no typical way to see a ghost. All ghost encounters are different. This one was not a typical ghost sighting, for me anyway. I have seen black masses in photographs and even in video but never in person. It got me thinking if this was not ghost related to the murder or another story from the hotel's past then what was it? Is there a possibility that this property is haunted by something else? Maybe even something that influenced the 1965 murder? There are so many more questions that I have now about this haunted location.

Ghost Stories of Christmas

When it comes to Christmas, we’re used to things being bright and cheery, and maybe with a hint of Scroogey tales to remind us how lucky we are. However, Ebenezer and his three ghosts aren’t the only spooky tales to come out of Christmas. In fact, at one time, ghost stories were far more relevant to Christmas than red-nosed reindeer. Even so, ghost stories and haunted happenings are part of what made Christmas what it is today.

As the best ghost tour company in San Antonio and Corpus Christi, we’re here to tell you a bit about some of our favorite Christmas ghost stories and the history of the tradition that lives on largely through Dickens’ tale of Scrooge and his ghost guided tour through Christmases past, present, and future.

The History of Christmas Ghost Stories

The tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas is one so rich that, by some accounts, it helped resurrect the holiday. By the time Dickens came along with “Carol” in 1863, Christmas was fading as a holiday. In the 1700’s, England was under the rule of Oliver Cromwell as the Lord and Protector. Cromwell despised Christmas, sighting its excesses as a decadent blemish on the character of English society at the time.

Up until this point, Christmas was pretty similar to how we celebrate it today. There was lots of food, decorating, singing, and of course, presents. Cromwell even banned the singing of Christmas Carols. However, one tradition that hasn’t carried on as heavily is the sharing of ghost stories. Unfortunately for him, it’s the one tradition that Cromwell might have cared for. Most of the stories were often meant to teach listeners about some of the more important concepts in life, like the significance of life and death and the effect our lives have on others. Scrooge is maybe the last great Christmas story, but here are a few more to haunt your holidays.

Christmas Ghost Stories

Our tales are a mixture of real experiences, potentially embellished truths, and the famous stories that started to gain popularity again in the Victorian period on the strength of Dickens’ work.

A Haunted Christmas at Alcatraz

Alcatraz has long been the subject of haunted tales, and with such a grizzly past, it’s not surprising. Even before the island became the U.S. prison facility that it is so well known for being, Native Americans would exile wrongdoers to the island where they were reported to be plagued by spirits. One Christmas day, the prison’s warden, James Johnston, held a Christmas party for his staff. Despite their surroundings, the atmosphere was bright and cheery until the lights went out.

Reportedly all at once, the hall went quiet, the temperature plummeted, the fire went out, and a man with mutton chops and a gray suit appeared. Apparently seen by the staff for nearly a full minute, the spirit abruptly disappeared, the fire returned, and the room returned to normal. The party, however, stayed extinguished.

“Oh, Whistle, and I’ll come to you, My Lad”

A tale set in the fictional English town of Burnstow, this story is hailed by some as one of the best ghost stories of all time, Christmas-themed or not. The story is essentially about a man who is visited by terrors that are given power by the snobby professor’s own lack of self-awareness. Professor Parkins, the main character of our story, is stuck in his own world view, haunted by his own tribulations and shortcomings. Parkins takes a snippet of what’s going on around him and conflates it as his entire reality, a concept that is all too relevant to society, especially in our day and age.

One day while inspecting an archeological site for a friend, the professor finds a whistle with Latin engravings. Curious, but unable to read the writing, Parkins blows the whistle. From there, Parkins is followed, by a creature who is always close by but never quite catches him. Readers and viewers, as this story has been adapted for film, are left to wonder what the creature is and what exactly its intentions are.

The Story of Krampus

Maybe the best known scary Christmas story, next to certain adaptations of “A Christmas Carol,” this one is more of a myth than a ghost story, but it has haunted children for centuries. At RJA tours, we aren’t the ones to dismiss any paranormal tales.

Krampus is a demonic, goat-like creature that punishes naughty children. The ultimate goal of these tales is to encourage kids to be good throughout the year, as Krampus doesn’t leave coal — he takes children. Reaffirming that you’d rather have a ghost in your house than a demon, Krampus doesn’t take children on a brisk walk of “what might be,” but rather pulls them into the underworld and introduces them to the rest of their miserable days. (Or, if they’re lucky, he beats them with a birch branch.)

Bramshill House’s Mistletoe Bride

The details of this story have been disputed, such as the name of the woman who died and whether or not her body was found before or after her tomb was unknowingly brought into the Bramshill house. What remains the same, no matter what version you’re exposed to, is the circumstances in which the mistletoe bride died. A young bride, like so many in her day, our ghost proposed a game before her untimely, Christmas day death. Rather than be carried to her bridal bed after the reception, as was the tradition at the time, the young bride proposed a game of hide-and-seek. Her husband, a lord, and her guests obliged, but at the end of the game, the bride was nowhere to be found.

People understandably assumed that the bride had made her escape and wandered somewhere far away. Given a five-minute head start, the lord was left searching for his bride until he eventually found her...50 years later. In what could be spun as a tale of the terror of excess, the woman laid years in her husband’s attic for all that time. Enclosed in a wooden chest in the attic of a mansion that sits on nearly 300 acres, the young bride was found still in her wedding dress, holding a sprig of mistletoe, with scratch marks on the ceiling of her spring-locked resting place.

The Figure in the Recliner

Our final story is a bit merrier, but with it comes haunting evidence of the merits of Christmas ghost stories, why they should be told, and whether or not our other ghost stories have some truth to them.

Set much further in the future than our other tales, this relatively pleasant haunting occurred on Christmas Eve in 1971. Living in Ontario at the time, our main character and his expectant wife were enjoying a cozy Christmas fire and wrapping up the last of their gifts. A single strand of lights hadn’t been working on their Christmas tree. However, as the fireplace and the rest of the lights went dark, the broken strand was suddenly lit. As with the happenings at Alcatraz, the temperature plummeted.

Sitting in the couple’s Lay-Z-Boy was the man’s mother, who had passed roughly seven years before. She hadn’t come to bring a mother-in-law’s wrath, but rather just sat and smiled at the couple. Neither the man nor his bride felt they should be scared. At midnight, according to the man, the fireplace and the working lights came back on, while the lights that had been broken never lit again.

Originally connected to the winter solstice of paganism, there was a belief that the end of the year brought the best chance for souls to cross into the realm of the living. This story, along with Alcatraz’s, gives some circumstantial evidence to that being the truth, and it maybe gives a little merit to the idea that Christmas is about so much more than presents.

Follow These Steps If You Suspect a Haunting

Document

If you’ve been hearing strange noises, feeling odd presences, or noticing other oddities around your home, be sure to document them in as much detail as possible. Use a note application on your phone, or purchase a journal where you can log dates, times, and what you experienced. If you’re so inclined, you can also make audio and/or video recordings of certain areas.

Investigate...

After you’ve gathered some data, it’s time to see if you can rule out other explanations. We recommend checking your carbon monoxide detector, as a leak can cause you to hear odd noises, see strange things, and feel chilled to the bone (in addition to putting your life at risk).

Do you notice any patterns in the data? In some cases, pipes expanding or contracting during the night can create strange noises. While some forms of paranormal activity have been known to occur at the same time each day, it’s important to try to rule out alternative explanations before contacting professional paranormal investigators.

...But Don’t Try a DIY Investigation

If you can’t find alternative explanations for the events occurring in your home, you might be tempted to try a seance or use a Ouija board to make contact with the other side. We strongly recommend not doing either, as you don’t want to provoke an entity that’s already making its presence known. Moreover, you can never be sure that you won’t allow other entities to make your home their own, ultimately making it more difficult for you to return to normal.

Can I take photos?

There’s no shortage of haunted locations in the United States, and South Texas is home to many of them. The Devil’s Bridge

The Devil’s Bridge in San Antonio is easily confused with other structures around the world which use the same name, and the vast majority of these structures have their own myths, legends, and folklore. The San Antonio Devil’s Bridge is no different, and it’s rumored that Satan himself has visited the bridge and that it is regularly haunted by other spectral forces as well.

Among many of the events that are rumored to have taken place near the Devil’s Bridge, a few of the most notable include odd deaths, ritualistic animal sacrifices, and spooky encounters with forces from the other side. If you decide to visit the Devil’s Bridge, you do so at your own peril!

The Aztec Theater

The Aztec Theater is one of the older structures in the San Antonio area. It was constructed in 1926, just before the Great Depression shook American life. The theater has changed hands numerous times over the decades, with many of the owners and staff reporting strange figures and occurrences. Disembodied voices calling out, footsteps in an otherwise empty building, and shadowy figures sitting in empty theaters are but a few of the many creepy happenings that have taken place. It seems that the Aztec’s current operators have come to terms with the haunted atmosphere, as the calendar is booked months in advance with popular shows and acts.

The Cadillac Bar

While the Cadillac Bar is primarily known for its historic roots, prominent guests, and outstanding menu, it’s also known as one of San Antonio’s most haunted locations. The area has a dark and morbid history, as many hangings took place at the courthouse just a short distance away. The bar is also built on top of an old cemetery, which could account for the high levels of spectral activity.

One of the Cadillac Bar’s most frequent otherworldly visitors goes by the name of Beatrice, though she’s not an entity you want to encounter. She’s reported to have a harsh demeanor, and has been known to cause trouble in the kitchen. Numerous customers and employees have encountered Beatrice in chilling encounters, so be sure to look behind you if you stop in for a drink!

In today’s post, we’ll talk you on a brief journey through three of the most haunted places in San Antonio. The Emily Morgan Hotel

You’ve surely heard of the paranormal activity that goes on in the Stanley and the Bourbon Orleans, but have you heard about terrifying activity that occurs at the Emily Morgan Hotel? Originally constructed in 1924, the hotel has a grim history. The Emily Morgan was originally used as a medical facility, with what is now the main lobby serving as the morgue and the basement housing the crematorium.

With such a dark past, it’s certainly no surprise that specters make their way through the halls and rooms of the Emily Morgan. Guests report that the 14th floor smells of medical equipment and has an “off and unsettling” feeling. The 12th floor houses one of the hospital’s operating rooms, and many guests have reported seeing flashing lights and apparitions in the hallways. While the basement is currently closed to the public, the hotel staff report plenty of unusual happenings, including hearing disembodied voices and smelling burning flesh. The San Antonio State Hospital

Mental health facilities and state hospitals often have gruesome and horrific histories, and it’s easy to understand why. The treatments used in decades long gone were both abusive and ineffective, and frequently led to unpleasant deaths. Restless spirits allegedly roam the grounds and occasionally make themselves known to the staff members, who readily agree that the hospital is undoubtedly a haunted site. Ghastly figures have been reported in the windows, and employees report seeing moving shadows in the halls.

Loma China Cemetery

There isn’t much that is known about this cemetery, except that it was built around 100 years ago. There are a few Chinese grave stones on the right side, and the property is currently owned and in use by a private family. A number of odd occurrences have taken place in the cemetery, including occult conjuring and the practice of witchcraft. These incidents usually occur when the moon is full, so don’t make your way to the cemetery if you see a full moon coming over the horizon. Many people report feeling “off” and “bad” energy as they make their way through the headstones, as if they are being warned by something sinister. Some have even reported seeing a tall, white apparition making its way through the graveyard.

Halloween Traditions and Their History

Jack-O-Lanterns

The origin of this tradition is rooted in Irish folklore. Legend has it that Jack, the local town drunk, trapped the devil in a tree. Jack only agreed to let the devil down under the agreement that Satan would never own is soul. Jack thought this gave him permission to lead a horrible, sinful life. When he died, he was not permitted into Heaven, and he wasn’t taken to Hell, either. Rather, he was doomed to live in purgatory, wandering the earth in search of an eternal resting place. To light his way, it is said that he placed a red-hot coal in a turnip to create a makeshift lantern.

Bobbing for Apples

Halloween has deep roots in Celtic mythology, and given that apples are often associated with the Otherworld, it is not surprising that they play an important role in Halloween history. Bobbing for apples used to be a method of divination that was performed by women around Halloween to predict who they would marry. How? They would mark an apple and toss it into a bucket of water. They believed they were destined to marry whoever pulled the apple from the water.

Trick-Or-Treating

The tradition of going door to door in search of treats is one that is a mixture of many traditions. For example, Medieval Englanders used to trade prayers for rich people’s souls in exchange for sweet, spicy soul cakes, and Celts would don costumes of evil spirits in an effort to confuse demons. While wearing costumes, medieval Europeans would parade through local neighborhoods, singing, dancing, and playing tricks. Trick-or-treating as we know it in America didn’t become popular until the 1920s, and many adults thought it was a mischievous method of extortion until the 1950s.

The Most Haunted Places in San Antonio

San Antonio has a rich past that is full of historical accounts. It is also steeped in urban legends, and many locals will tell you that there are several haunted sites throughout the city. San Antonio Haunts

The Alamo

This former Franciscan mansion is the ultimate stop for San Antonio tourists, and for good reason: the site played a pivotal role during Texas’ war for independence from Mexico in 1836. In December 1835, a group of Texas soldiers captured the Alamo from Mexican forces and seized control of San Antonio. Despite having a very small army, the Texas volunteers stayed at the Alamo, determined to maintain their control. Historical accounts document that, only a couple of months later, Mexican invaders attacked the Alamo and some 200 Texan defenders fought for 13 days before they were finally overpowered. It is believed that many of the fallen soldiers were buried on-site in a mass grave after their horrible deaths. The first report of ghostly apparitions occurred in 1836 just shortly after the Alamo was captured. A small group of Mexican forces were sent back to the Alamo to destroy it, only to return to their commander with accounts of ghosts wielding swords of fire to protect the historical site. Since then, there have been multiple reports of ghost sightings, and many visitors claim they have heard moaning voices inside of the Alamo.

Grey Moss Inn

It takes only one look at the historic Grey Moss Inn to know that this is no ordinary establishment. Located just northwest of San Antonio, this unique restaurant and its accompanying cottages are covered by a large canopy of ancient Texas oak trees hanging with Spanish moss. The Grey Moss Inn opened in 1929 and is known for serving up delicious meals. It also boasts one of our state’s most extensive wine lists. The little inn has been the setting for countless romantic dinners, wine tastings, and other jovial events. In 1976, the inn’s owner, Mary Howell, passed away. However, according to many locals, she has never had the heart to leave the restaurant that she ran and maintained for so many years. Visitors have reported seeing ghostly apparitions and paranormal investigators have captured recordings with sounds of voices, doors closing, and chairs moving.

Menger Hotel

The Menger Hotel prides itself on being the oldest, continuously operating hotel that is west of the Mississippi. The hotel is only a stone’s throw from the Alamo, so you just know that it is guaranteed to have its own colorful history. Right on this property in the 1890s, Teddy Roosevelt used the Menger Bar to gather the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, otherwise known as the “Rough Riders,” in preparation to fight Cuba in the Spanish-American war. The ballrooms in this hotel were a frequent place for elite galas and cotillion parties. Throughout the years, there have been numerous sightings of ghosts who were associated with the hotel in real life. For example, many claim to have seen the ghost of Sallie White, a chambermaid who was shot by her husband at the hotel. People have also reported sightings of apparitions dressed in World War II-era clothing in the Menger Bar and on the third floor.

Victoria’s Black Swan Inn

Believed to be situated upon what once was an ancient Indian burial ground, Victoria’s Black Swan Inn has more than 150 years of folklore and legend associated with it. Some of the most well-known San Antonians have called this amazing two-story, plantation-style home their residence throughout the years. Today, it provides an incredible wedding and event center that is shrouded in pure Southern charm, from the meandering waters of Salado Creek to the century-old oak and pecan trees that surround the property. Even before the home was built in 1867, the proper seemed to be plagued with tragedy. In 1842, more than 60 Mexican soldiers were massacred here, and they were not given a proper burial. Several of the home’s owners also suffered untimely deaths. Numerous guests at the inn have reported seeing and feeling a multitude of ghostly apparitions. Some have even reported hearing a deep voice yelling, “Get out!”
