The Origin of the Menger Hotel

Before the Menger Hotel became a hotel, it was the home of the most remembered fight for Texas Independence. The Battle of the Alamo! Twenty-three years later, the hotel was built. With a history spanning decades, the hotel has seen many trials and tribulations of the many lives endured in the great state of Texas. Over the years, the Menger Hotel has remained one of the most beautiful places to stay in all of Texas and has welcomed some incredibly famous guests in the last century and a half. From General Robert E. Lee to Oscar Wilde, the list of celebrity guests remains long!

Teddy Roosevelt’s Spirit

A presidential poltergeist? Former President Teddy Roosevelt was an immense fan of the Menger Hotel, and he visited the hotel on three different occasions. The Menger Bar is renowned for where Theodore Roosevelt selected many of his famous Rough Riders back in 1898. In preparation for the Spanish-American War, he used the bar as an induction station. It’s no wonder that he’s deciding to hang around the grounds to share his love for the Menger Hotel with current guests! Today, it is said that guests see his ghost in the Menger Bar from time to time, looking for a bit of drink and some conversation. Maybe you’ll be the one he chooses to speak with!

Hauntings of Sallie White

Sallie White was a much-loved employee of the Menger Hotel back in the late 1870s and was known for her sweet disposition and work ethic. Her husband, however, was not and was known for his jealous streak and overblown arguments regarding Sallie’s employment at The Menger Hotel. One day, in a fit of jealous rage, Sallie’s husband snapped and stalked Sallie through the town. When he finally caught up with her at the Menger Hotel, he unloaded his pistol into her and murdered his wife in cold blood. For those wanting to meet Sallie in her ghostly form, make sure to book a room on the third floor of the hotel’s original section. Keep a lookout for a nearly transparent form donning a maid’s uniform, with a long scarf tied around her head.

Interactions with the Paranormal

When it comes to interactions with the paranormal, there are only three main rules to follow. You should always be serious about your communications with the beyond. By doing this, you have a greater chance of making contact and protecting yourself from being used by a nasty spirit. Always be polite when addressing spirits; the last thing you want to do is offend a ghost, especially when you’re unable to tell who or what you’re talking with. Finally, never forget to say goodbye when your session comes to an end. Saying goodbye ensures that spirits won’t linger and continue to contact you without your permission.

With the many ghosts that call the Menger Hotel home, you are almost guaranteed to have a run-in with a spectral inhabitant of this haunted hotel. Do you have questions about our company or the ghost tours we provide? Visit our
